Foot Pain & Plantar Fasciitis — What You Need to Know
Dr. Z explains the most common causes of heel and arch pain, what plantar fasciitis actually is, and what tends to work — and what doesn't.
How to Tape Your Foot for Plantar Fasciitis
A step-by-step demonstration of the arch taping technique Dr. Z recommends for plantar fasciitis. Practical, inexpensive, and effective for many patients.
How to Tape Your Foot
A few things to note about the arch taping technique shown in the video. Duct tape works well — wide tape is not required. Hockey stick tape or athletic strapping tape are also good options. Expensive kinesiology tape is not recommended here because it stretches too much to provide the support you need.
The tape is anchored on the back of the heel. In the demonstration, the plantar fascia is marked to make it easier to see where the support needs to go.
When the toes are pushed downward, the skin on the bottom of the foot wrinkles. This means the plantar fascia is not under tension — that is the position your foot should be in when the tape is applied.
The purpose of the tape is to absorb the pull when the arch drops, so the plantar fascia doesn't have to. The tape should end at the ball of the foot, before the base of the toes, so your toe movement stays unrestricted.
